What is Import Export Code (IEC)?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit registration issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) that every importer or exporter in India must have. Without it, customs will not clear your shipments and banks cannot process foreign trade payments.

IEC is a one-time registration with a simple annual electronic confirmation to keep it active.

Why is it required?

  • Mandatory for any import or export of goods, and for service exporters claiming export benefits.
  • Required by banks for inward/outward foreign currency remittances against trade.
  • Gateway to export promotion benefits, RCMCs and schemes like RoDTEP.

Documents required

  • PAN of the applicant entity
  • Aadhaar / photo of proprietor or authorized signatory
  • Bank account details / cancelled cheque
  • Proof of business address
  • DSC or Aadhaar e-sign for online filing
