GST registration is mandatory once your business crosses the turnover threshold — ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in most states. Many businesses also register voluntarily to claim input tax credit and work with larger clients.
Who Needs GST Registration?
- Businesses above the turnover threshold (₹40 lakh goods / ₹20 lakh services)
- Anyone selling goods or services across state borders
- E-commerce sellers (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, etc.) — mandatory regardless of turnover
- Businesses that want to claim input tax credit on purchases
Documents Required
For a proprietorship:
- PAN card and Aadhaar card of the proprietor
- Passport-size photograph
- Business address proof (electricity bill / rent agreement + NOC)
- Bank account details — cancelled cheque or bank statement
For Partnership Firms and Companies
In addition to the above, you will need:
- Partnership deed or Certificate of Incorporation
- PAN of the firm / company
- PAN, Aadhaar and photos of all partners / directors
- Authorization letter or board resolution for the authorized signatory
Process and Timeline
The application is filed on the GST portal with Aadhaar authentication. If the details are clean, GSTIN is usually issued within 3–7 working days. If the officer raises a query, a reply must be filed — which is where professional help saves time.
After registration, monthly or quarterly returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B) must be filed on time to avoid late fees — even if there are no sales.
